Password Generator

To create a strong password, choose the length, tick lowercase, uppercase, digits and symbols, and press 'Generate password'. The password is generated with the browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) and contains at least one character from each type you select. It is never sent to a server or stored. The strength indicator shows the entropy (in bits) calculated from the length and the character pool.

How to use it

  1. 1Choose the password length with the slider or the number field (4–128 characters).
  2. 2Tick the character types to use: lowercase, uppercase, digits, symbols.
  3. 3For passwords that will be typed or read aloud, turn on 'Exclude look-alike characters'.
  4. 4Press 'Generate password'; changing a setting generates a new one.
  5. 5Copy the password and save it in your password manager; the tool does not keep it.

Frequently asked questions

Are the generated passwords really random?

Yes. Instead of Math.random, the tool uses the browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues). Characters are picked with equal probability, avoiding modulo bias, and the result is shuffled.

Is my password sent to a server or saved?

No. The password is generated only in your browser; it is not sent over the network or written to local storage. Only your length and character type settings are remembered in your browser for your next visit.

How is the strength indicator calculated?

It calculates the entropy of a randomly generated password: length × log2(character pool size). A longer password or more character types raise the entropy. The value is only meaningful for passwords generated randomly by this tool; it does not measure passwords you type yourself.

What does excluding look-alike characters do?

It removes characters that are easy to confuse, such as i, l, 1, L, o, 0, O, I and |, from the pool. This reduces mistakes when you have to type or read out the password; entropy drops slightly because the pool is smaller.

Where should I keep my passwords?

A commonly recommended approach is to use a different password for every account and keep them in a trusted password manager. Turn on two-step verification wherever it is available.
